I had the opportunity to go back home this past weekend and make a visit at my old high school. It is really interesting to see the strides they have already made with the way classes are being ran and even the technology being used. Where I come from is a little tiny town in eastern washington where cell phone service is hit and miss so as you can imagine technology has never been something my school was good with when i was there. Now as I went back and visited the staff has changed, there is a lot more technology in the classrooms and even the attitude of the school has changed. Coming from a small town wheat farming community sometimes kids have hard time striving for success because all you know and see are a poor town with people struggling to make it month in and month out. So I just thought it was really encouraging going back and seeing the improvements made with the ability to reach the different kinds of kids and well as the attitude change.
Since I graduated from high school and have been on my journey through college I feel coming from a background like I did within the poor community I feel able to teach to kids from all different aspects in life. Sometimes its harder to reach kids when all they know is to settle for what they see, but by being apart of that I feel educated enough now to help fix that and teach to any kid regardless of what their background is like.

Wow Daley. I wonder if you realize what a profound personal reflection this is. You're right - there is no better person to reach such kids than you because you've been through what they're experiencing now and you see a brighter future for them than most people typically would. That's encouraging that rural schools are stepping up and integrating more technology despite the financial crunch that many schools and districts are in (especially in Eastern WA). Do you think you'd go back to your hometown to teach??
ReplyDeleteOh wow, and I thought I came from a small town! It's fun going back and seeing the improvements, but also kinda makes me jealous that I never had the technological influence/advantage. Your reflections give me ideas of what to reflect on..which is nice since I was struggling for ideas.
ReplyDeleteI would have never guessed that you were from a small town Dailey. That is pretty crazy that your school is getting technology so fast. I recently went back to my high school as well and was not surprised at all at the lack of technology used there. Chalk boards are still prevelent, and a projector is a rarity.
